Got A New Dog? 2 Tips To Help Your Dog Find Its Way Home If It Gets Lost

by Jennifer Barrett

If you have a new dog, you want to do everything you can to keep it safe. One thing that may happen is your dog may get lost in your area. If this does happen, you may never be able to find it. Fortunately, there are things you can do to get your dog back to you if it does get lost, two of which are listed below.

Dog ID Tag

Purchase a dog ID tag to attach to your dog's collar. On the tag, have the dog's name and your phone number. Do not put your address on the ID tag, however. You may not want the person that found your dog to be able to find you.

You can purchase custom dog ID tags in stores or online. You can find dog tags made of stainless steel and even in the shape of your favorite sport ball, such as a football or soccer ball. If you are a hockey fan, you can find custom dog ID tags shaped like a hockey puck. No matter what type and style you choose, the company will engrave what you want onto the tag. The engraving will be so that it is very easy for someone to read. Some custom dog ID tag companies also make collars that you can add stitching to, if you prefer.

Dog Microchip

You can also take your dog to the veterinarian to have a microchip placed under their skin. The chip is very tiny and permanent. If someone finds your dog, they can take it to a veterinarian to see if it has a chip. If so, the veterinarian can scan the information on the chip. This information may be include name, cell phone number, and the city that you live in.

The veterinarian injects the implant under your dog's skin much like when they give your dog a vaccination. The most common place to implant a microchip for dogs is between the shoulder blades. This will not be painful for your dog and the vet will not have to give it any type of anesthesia. The entire process only takes about a minute. When the veterinarian is finished inserting the chip they will scan it to ensure that it works.

If you choose to have your dog microchipped, it's a good idea to also put a dog ID tag on their collar showing the name and phone number of the microchip company.

Your veterinarian can give you many more tips on how to keep your dog safe.

About Me

supplies to keep a dog happy when alone

I have a five-year old American Bulldog that our family adores. Up until this past winter, I was a stay at home mom and rarely left our boy home alone. When I went back to work, our dog started acting out. He was destroying my home. I took him to the vet to be sure that there wasn't any medical reasons for his behavior and then started doing some research. Our boy was going through separation anxiety and didn't like being left home alone. Our trainer suggested a few new toys for him, a bed and to try to re-kennel train him. We visited our local pet store and loaded up some new things for him. Find out all about pet supplies and what you need to keep a dog busy during a day home alone.
